I'm picking up an i5 iMac today, its power will exceed my needs for now, but I'm wondering if, down the road, its possible to swap out the CPU with an i7? Are the iMac i5 and iMac i7 identical besides the processor?

The price difference is so small it's better to just buy an i7 now if you want one.

I know that, but I cant afford to wait for weeks for it to arrive. I'm selling my MacPro 1,1 today and need to replace it today, Apple Retail Stores don't sell the i7's, hence why I was asking if its possible to upgrade the i5 to an i7 down the line.

Yes, it will be upgradable to the i7. It will void the warranty though and its nowhere as easy as on a desktop computer.
