I have a HL-DT-ST DVDRW GA32N Superdrive in my 2010 i7 iMac and I've had to reinstall the OS twice, because someone in the house kept messing with different files. Anyhow, the first time I installed it the superdrive was very loud, as it was the second time I installed it. It was like a loud vibration, as soon as I put the disc in. I have put other discs in and they are as quiet as can be. I've tested 9 or 10 discs and they all seem to be quiet. So I decided to put in the install disc one more time and it was quiet as well, no more vibration. Is there something wrong here or are these drives just noisy sometimes?

When installing the OS X it's loud as it's being accessed all the time. If you just put the disc in and do nothing, it won't be noisy because it's not even spinning
My HL-DT-ST DVDRW GA32N acts the same way. Some discs it it really noisy, others it is quiet and smooth. I even ejected a noisy disc, then re-inserted it and it was quiet and smooth. I do often have the drive inserted, but never mounted. I either have to reboot, or open the cd/dvd utility to get it to mount / eject.
That is ok, I am considering putting a SSD drive in that location anyway and going with an external drive.

Just making sure I wasn't the only one, I guess it's the way the disc drive operates. I was thinking about getting an external Bluray drive to watch movies when I install windows, so I guess it's not really a big deal. Oh, but I don't have a problem with movies, cds, or anything mounting. That all works fine.
Had 3 previous 2010s all had hitachi SuperDrives. Each time I returned them (for various reasons) - I reinstalled osx and noticed that the drive was very loud when reading.
On my latest, it has the pioneer SuperDrive and it was practically silent when installing Starcraft 2 which is a very read intensive process.

Was it also vibrating? I guess I'm worrying over nothing as long as it works. I mean I'd like a machine with a pioneer drive, but I have no yellowing, no dead pixels, no humming, no HDD noise. So I think I'm better off keeping this machine. I was thinking about getting an external drive anyhow so I could play blurays in Windows, I mean with this beautiful screen, why not?
