imac i7 ram upgrade?

4gb of ram for the 27inc i7 is 290 AUD for 4x2gb sticks.

on crucial it is 158 AUD for the same memory. Shoild I buy here and upgrade myself?

So you have 2x2GB now? Getting 1x4GB is wise if you're going to upgrade to +12GB in the future and it's only a tenner more so get the 4GB module

I wasn't too sure, but who/how would I be upgrading my RAM if I were to purchase RAM from websites such as the ones posted above? Would I take it to the apple store and have them do it? Since I am guessing I'd have to open it up which would void any warranty.

No, you do this yourself. The instructions are in the manual that came with your iMac but there's a panel on the bottom of the unit that you unscrew and just slot in the RAM.

This is a youtube link and it shows exactly how to do it, if you also do a search on youtube there's heaps of others too. I haven't got my 27" i7 yet (ordered and being built), but I've already researched the upgrade and it looks like anyone can do it....hope this helps.

Just to reassure you - changing/adding RAM is dead easy on the iMacs. I was kinda nervous about it the first time I did it but seriously it's trivial. The ooooonly slightly "awr heck" part is that the sticks are a little stiff when you try to remove or insert one, and you can worry you're going to snap it. (They are actually strong, just ease/work it in/out.) But once you've done it once it's simple. So don't stress it.

It used to be that you had to use matching pairs or even exact same chips but that's history 2x2GB + 4GB should work fine, only dual-channeling will be disabled but that doesn't matter (only ~5% boost anyway). Nowadays you can mix them pretty much as much as you like, just buy RAM with right specs and you're fine, 4x2GB is very common setup and it's absolutely perfect, zero issues.
