I have a 2 GHz Core Duo iMac from mid-2006. Except for a fried hard drive replaced under warranty, the computer has been a workhorse.
In the past month, every time I try to rip a DVD in Handbrake, the computer shuts down without warning after 30 minutes to an hour.
Did some research and looks like it may have been overheating. There was an early 2006 firmware update that corrected fan behavior on this model, but the dialog box says it's not applicable for my computer.
Downloaded smcFanControl and turned all 3 fans to max before ripping a DVD. The computer has stayed cool and kept running during the rip.
When I cranked up all the fans, a ton of dust blew out of the vents.
So here's the question. Do people think I:
a) have a broken fan controller that was not turning on the fans to keep the computer cool
b) fan controller's OK and now that I blew out all the accumulated dust from the vents everything will work fine
Thanks.
