iMac Intel - Stuck DVD

Hello all,

I have searched the forums and found no solutions to the 'stuck dvd' issue I have been facing so I thought I would answer my own question and open a topic so others can add other tips as well as ask further questions.

In my situation I will base my found 'solutions' on an Intel 24" iMac with 10.5

To eject normally:
Press the 'eject' button on the keyboard, a symbol will come up on your screen in the middle bottom like the volume does and your disc should come out.
or
drag and drop the icon of the DVD/CD onto the Trash. The Trash will have changed to an arrow.

To eject on boot:
Press the power button and let go. Click and hold the mouse button down, the, DVD/CD should eject. Let go of the button and your computer should boot.
or
Press the power button and let go. Press the 'c' key on the keyboard and hold it down, the DVD/CD should eject.Let go of the 'c' key and your computer should boot.

If its stuck!:
::::The Intel iMac's DO NOT have an emergency eject hole, do not use a paper clip:::::
Basically if its stuck so are you. If you do anything invasive you risk your warranty.
One dangerous recommendation I received from an Apple Tech is to tip the Mac a bit and try the eject and let gravity do the work. (This will not help if the DVD/CD is hitting the case due to a misalignment)

Smartest Solution if Stuck:
Take it to a verified warranty depot/shop/store/tech and have them remove the DVD/CD. They will have to take it apart and if your Mac is under warranty request they replace the drive as stuck DVD/CD's are known to damage the drive.

I hope I have covered the 'Stuck DVD' problem well enough to help anyone else in this situation out.

the safest thing to do would be to take it to a apple store to get the cd taken out and the drive fixed

Easy Way to get second DVD out of IMac Intel

Hello Fellow IMAC INTEL Friends;

My 2 year old son put a second DVD, two Rollie Polie Olie disks , into my 24 inch" Imac this morning. When I called the apple store where I bought it they said I would need to wait till Monday to get some help and it would probably cost something. I suppose I was impatient ....

I looked at the little edge of the dvd that was still sticking out and I just felt that the computer constantly trying to take the DVD in and eject it could not be good for the drive and disks.

Here is what I figured out and it is very simple. I am confident this will not void any warrantees since you are just withdrawing a dvd.( I am not sure ask apple) I think it is much less intrusive than opening the case or anything else by using tools etc.

The second DVD will probably not go in all the way when the second one is pushed in. This is not done easily and will have been done with more force than usual ...

The felt liner is very fragile and you do not want to jam tweezers screwdriver etc... or anything that might damage a disk or the drive.

This is the solution

I am fixing my house and had some metallic tape ( two inch wide) . The kind that sticks to anything but is aluminum based and very very strong . You can tear it but if you pull it it is aluminum. It is used to seal vapour barrier rolls as they are added to an exterior wall. You can get some at any hardware store in your area I am sure..

I used the side edge ( it is a very straight flat line) for the part to be inserted and only about one inch of the sticky part was inserted. Only about 1.5 inches of tape wide and i inch to go in deep. I did use scissors to smooth out the part being inserted so that nothing would catch on the felt.

I then used another piece to tape on the other side of the 2 " wide tape to make something to hold on too. 1 " to go in and 1 " to take more tape to to hold on to.

I used the thinest credit type card ( I used a member points card from Staples which was thinner than normal credit cards.)

With the card I carefully , don't push hard but push in enough to see which side you can insert the tape on.The second dvd is on one side of the one that is inside. You want to put the tape in on the side with room or on the side that the DVD that was in first is on...

I used the card as a guide on the non sticky side and straightened the aluminium tape so that it would slide in easily . The Staples card was used to push the tape against the DVD and this was done firmly but not with force . Just enough to be sure the tape was sticking to the DVD. This tape is very sticky and sticks easily but because it is also very strong as aluminum you can also very easily peel it off afterwards.

I then turned the computer back on while holding on to the tape firmly . Don't pull until the computer tries to eject. You will need to be pushing the eject button as it starts up. You will not need to pull hard but just enough to help .

It came out first try.

I took some pictures and will put them up here if what I have explained is not clear to anyone. Anyone who wants to see let me know.

This worked a charm for me a few minutes ago...DVD stuck in 24" iMac

Open Terminal and type "drutil tray eject" to eject the disc/tray, and "drutil tray close" to close the tray.
