Why buy an Intel Imac? They are built on a notebook chip. Will the pc desktops smoke the imac because they will be based on the new intel desktop chips?

The new Intel desktop chips (Conroe and Woodcrest) aren't due out till later this year. If it's possible to get one into the iMac enclosure without it producing too much heat then it's likely we could see an iMac with an Intel Conroe chip by the end of the year.

i personally think that the desktop processors will produce too much heat for the imac. i think they will be saved for the powermac. just my opinion

We'll just have to wait and see I guess. Nothing wrong with a 2.33GHz Merom chip in the new iMac - that'll still be a damn fast chip.

i agree. i'm not saying that having a notebook chip in the imac is a bad idea

Pentium M is faster than Pentium 4 CPU......;)

Okay maybe not 3.8 vs 1Ghz but you get the idea.

There are many good reasons to put a notebook CPU on a desktop. The main benefit is quiet operation. My new 20-inch iMac Core Duo runs as quiet as any notebook would, even with 7200 rpm spinning. In addition, notebook-grade CPU permits smaller desktop chassis. And there's the obvious energy saving.

Now, if you are looking for no compromise power user's desktop computer, notebook CPU may strike as an odd choice. But iMac isn't such a computer.
