Have a 1.5 inch 2017 iMac.
Running Mojave. Vers.10.14.4

My son insists our iMac has built in Speakers. I didn't think so.

I looked in preference/Sound, but can only
find under Output, "Headphones". Volume Slider(s) all set to Max.

So, are there internal speakers ? Sure would be nice.

If so, how do I activate them, please ?

Thanks,
Bob

Yes, there are internal speakers. Anything plugged into the Headphones jack will mute the speakers, however. Likewise, they can be defeated.

Certain apps, utilities and extensions, likewise, will mute the speakers. I'm thinking of Soundflower but there are many others.

If there is no option to enable the speakers, we'll need far more info to know why and what must be done.

Sometimes, the best thing to do is to get Apple Support on the phone and have him/her walk through the settings till you get to that Eureka! moment and it works as it should.

sometimes, the sensor that detects the presence of a headphone plug can be confused by dust.

Hi,

Got it !

The reason i didn't have any sound was, first, I never knew there were internal speakers, and also that I had a plug for the headphones into the headphone output jack which disabled them.

So, all happy now.

Thanks for help,
Bob
[doublepost=1555274796][/doublepost]Hi again,

A bit more:

Is it possible via a menu selection (somewhere) to keep my headphones in the output
jack, yet be able to easily switch to the internal speakers without having to unplug them ?

There's bluetooth audio :) Or a USB DAC.

Personally, think that the imac's headphone jack is an accident waiting to happen. But then, I also don't use the imac speakers, and route everything through my stereo.
