imac internal speakers blown out?

Hi, I have a bit of a problem,

Is there a way to tell if/how my speakers are damaged?

I have 24" aluminum imac (bought December 2007, whichever model that is), and I was using the internal speakers (I don't normally do this).

I was playing an avi file (xvid / mp3 encoding) on VLC.app, and i struck the space bar to pause it. Instead of stopping, my comp emitted an extremely loud "beep" sound at around 400 Hz, and ever since the audio has been weird. At first it was sorta/really scratchy and broken and a little diminished in loudness, but now it is very quiet, playing sounds at around 1/4 the normal volume. What the hell happened to it? Please Help!! If it matters I run Snow Leopard, though it came with Leopard

I have the exact same problem... The left speaker made a horn sound while I was using the vlc app. I even have the same iMac ... 24" alum but from 2008. I don't think the sound loss, if any, is noticeable, so I am not sure what I should do.

screen shot in VLC just did the same!

wanted to grab an image from an MKH file playing in VLC, heard a loud BOOOP then it went silent. tried playing another file and it just crackles. audio plays fine through headphone jack into stereo, so it's just the internal speakers.

I wonder if VLC can be responsible for this. I actually never use it myself, but thanks for giving me a headsup for the future.

Sounds like one or possibly both speakers are broken. Or this might be temporary. I'd check the volume settings and see if you can find anything.
If you can't, you might wanna invest in some speakers.

i generally run the audio jack out to my amp/stereo, but i'm sure glad i didn't have it plugged in when this happened!

i've found other forum posts where speakers are being blown, but i do find the VLC connection here strange and off-putting. feels like some strange punishment for pirating high-def movies. damn.

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but the exact same thing happened to me recently. Both speakers are working, but the audio-quality seems a lot worse than before. Happened to me while watching an mkv file in VLC.

Hard to explain what exactly is the issue, and was wondering if any of you who had the same experience discovered if the speakers were damaged for good or not..

just as inexplicable as the cutting out of sound, my speakers eventually resumed working order and have since continued to work splendidly. i no longer take screenshots in VLC, as a precaution.
