iMac internet sharing is causing huge slowdowns

So i currently have 3 macs connected to the router. An iMac (my parent's), a mac mini (my brother's) and a macbook pro (mine).

Whenever the iMac's airport is turned on (and sharing internet) me and my brother have a huge decrease in download speed (loading webpages, etc.).

Is this normal? If not, what can I do to prevent this from happening? (asides from turning the airport off that is).
