I doubt he means the first one. And it would be much easier, and cost effective to go the eGPU route. Once you get everything in place, you can upgrade the GPU every year easily.

If you're thinking eGPU, I'm not 100% but pretty sure you're going to need at least Thunderbolt I which wasn't in the iMacs until the 2011 models.

Even then TB1 was pretty restricting on an eGPU's due to bandwidth, you'd need one with TB2 to make it worth the effort.

OP the iMac uses mobile graphics cards and they are very difficult to replace very expensive to buy and anything compatible with your old machine would not be worth the effort or cost of installing.

If you if you want to do it as a project or a bit of fun with old free parts and a spare iMac sure go ahead, if you are intending to do it to get a daily use and stable computer it really is not a good use of time or money, and may well ruin what you have.

The only way you will be able to power your iMac's built-in screen, with a better GPU, is to actually replace the internal GPU.
And your options will be rather limited.
The best option will be to get a 6000Series Radeon card (6970)from a high end 2011 iMac to swap out your current card, ebay would be the best bet as these cards from parts vendors are still going to be $800+ dollars in some cases for that card.
