Hello people,

So my question is pretty straightforward.
I have an iMac (Late 2009) 21.5 inch, Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06 GHz
I already have the initial 500gb HDD and ideally I want to hook another 250gb SSD and use the HDD for mass storage of files.

Is there space and ports to add the SSD or do I have to replace the HDD and kiss it goodbye?

Cheers

EugW answered your question by linking to that data doubler device from OWC.
That bracket would replace your iMac's optical drive, and is an option that allows you to add another internal storage drive, such as the SSD that you would like to add.
Of course, that removes your optical drive.
The real answer is: There is no way to install a second storage device, other than removing the optical drive, and using that connection for a second device. The data doubler makes it a neat installation.
