Hello,

I got my hands on a iMac late 2013, 27 inch from ebay. I performed an upgrade to clean up the internals, resupply the heatsink compound, add a new SSD. I ran prime95 on it for 2 days at full load, Cinebench, checked the SSD speed, checked connectivity and additionals and then sealed it up after ascertaining that it was stable. The SSD is a Crucial 2TB from amazon.

Prior to sealing it up, I was able to download Catalina from internet recovery to run all these tests.

Now, after sealing it up, I wanted to use Open Core Legacy Patcher to update to the latest available OS that could be supported on my iMac, which was supposedly Ventura. However, that was unsucessful, and in the process, I formatted my SSD as well. No biggie. I thought I could reinstall Catalina again and try Monterey.

Oh good Lord. This thing is stuck on Maverick. I don't know why it did that. I followed the same steps I did when I installed the SSD, and it thought it best to install Maverick. Not sure if the Open Core Legacy Patcher did something.

Now, this is where I'm horribly horribly stuck. Since its Mavericks, none of the basic tools are supported. I can't even browse the internet. I can't download apps from the app store, because for some reason, it doesn't recognize my apple ID and password (I am typing it correctly). It takes me to the iforgot page and does nothing for me. I tried installing TransMac, downloading an image of High Sierra and creating a bootable CD using it, but even that won't work.

I'm not the most intelligent when it comes to anything Apple. I need to set this up for my son and daughter who will come to the UK and begin their studies here. PLEASE HELP!!

I have a windows machine for myself, an 32 GB Flash Drive, a 1 TB External HDD. The keyboard and mouse connected on the imac are the windows one.

Did you try internet recovery? Boot while holding down COMMAND+OPTION+R

If that doesn't work, you can build a Catalina installer on your Windows machine.

My mac is connected to a storage drive, and the base osx system has a osx image on it (which I'm unable to format).

So, internet recovery defaults to Mavericks for some blasted reason.

I have tried the pureinfotech steps and have the bootable hdd, but I can't seem to get it to load up while bootup. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong. Thanks for the reply man!

Are you sure you tried COMMAND+OPTION+R and not COMMAND+R?

Dude! I'm an idiot! I was not doing Internet Recovery! Its installing Catalina as I type this message.

I love you man for helping out! You are the best! :)

On a side note, do you think I should install Monterey with Open Core Legacy Patcher or try risking Ventura again. My file system was APFS, if that makes any difference.

Honestly, if it were for my kid, I'd consider just sticking with Catalina for the time being. Security for Catalina was last updated in the summer.

Or if you really want, go to Monterey. Ventura is far too early at this point. My main machine is officially supported by Ventura, and I haven't even upgraded that one yet. I have Ventura only on a secondary machine.
