I am about at my wits end and don't know what to do. I have a late 2007 iMac 7,1 that had symptoms of freezing and locking up with Mavericks on it. I was told the Hard Drive might be going so I replaced it (it was under warranty) but the same symptoms occurred... Locking up where the mouse pointer moves but you can't click on anything. Then when you do a hold the power button down reboot, it never fully boots up and the screen stays gray. I then booted up into Safe mode and downloaded El Capitan and installed that in hopes of it fixing this problem. To no avail, the computer locked up a day after I loaded Cap on it. I can however hold the Shift key down and boot into Safe mode and everything works but slower. Does anybody have any idea what is wrong with my computer???? We really can't afford a new one right now.

Thanks in advance.

Is there any way to have OSX show what it is loading and what it is getting hung up on?

Activity monitor will show which processes are using CPU and RAM.

It sounds like you have a rogue app on there that is not compatable your best bet would be to do the clean install and load them back one at a time.

I was hoping on a way that I wouldn't have to reload everything to determine what was wrong. I am sure that if I reloaded each item one by one that would require some testing period of a day minimum between apps loaded because my computer usually runs fine for a day before it locks up. That would take a long time unless one of the first apps I tried was the culprit. That was why I was hoping there was some sort of Log report that OSX makes if it has a problem. Does it?

This is a good troubleshooting step. Safe mode stops all login and startup or launch items from running. So if it works fine in safe mode and not otherwise, that proves your issue is a conflict with a third party utility or app running at startup.

Those items are stored in the Users and Groups section for your account and also in the following folders. The ~ is your personal user account folder.

Code:
~/Library/LaunchAgents
/Library/LaunchAgents
/Library/LaunchDaemons
/Library/StartupItems

Try running the app Etrecheck. It will create an anonymized report that shows everything running. Post the output of that report here and we may be able to help you narrow down the culprit.

You could also try looking in Console app for log entires at the exact time and date this occurs for tips.

I thought that might be the case. Although my computer skills are limited, I thought that if I could start it in safe mode and it then runs OK, that there must be something loading at startup that was causing problems. This made me think the whole problem is software related and not my iMac dying.

You have quite a few third party apps and utilities running there, but no one of them jumps out at me as a known trouble spot. Unfortunately, the only way to trouble shoot this is to just start removing some to narrow it down. Anything not from Apple that is "loaded" or "running" is a suspect.

What I would do is use the Etrecheck report as a checklist and remove half the items at a time then see if that fixes it. Just keep removing half again each restart until you find the culprit. Just drag the items from the launch folder I listed earlier off to the Desktop so you can put it back later if you need to.

Are these the ones you are talking about??

Some will be in the login section of your account under Users & Groups in System Prefs.

The rest will be in Finder in the folders I listed. To easily get to each folder you can triple click the line below to select the path then right click and in the Services menu pick Reveal in Finder. That will open the folder in Finder. The Etrecheck report shows which section each is in.

Code:
~/Library/LaunchAgents
/Library/LaunchAgents
/Library/LaunchDaemons

I removed all I could find and the iMac was working for about a week and a half and then it started doing the same things (locked up with only the mouse pointer moving could not click on anything, would reboot in safe mode, then it might reboot normally but then only work for a short time and lock up again). I reloaded OSX and it worked for about 15 minutes and locked up again. Here is the current Etrecheck report. I would like to remove more items if required but I am having trouble finding out where on my computer to go to remove them. I currently have Activity monitor running showing what is occupying the CPU to maybe get a glimpse of what process ties it up when it fails. Here is the report. Does anything stick out?

I'm a little confused the way you worded this.... so you still have these lockups but it never happens in safe mode... is that still the case??

It looks like you got rid of most of the junk, but have a few left (below).

Open System Preference then in the Users & Groups pane go to Login Items like in my screenshot and remove everything from there and give it a try. You can probably leave CCC there since it works fine for me under El Capitan.

Sorry about my poor wording. Yes, the lock ups only occur when I do a normal boot up. If it boots up, it will work fine for a few hours or so then the screen freezes and only the mouse pointer moves but I can't click on anything. I then hold the power button and force a shut down and re-boot into disc utility and do first aid on the drive and then it may or may not boot up. If it doesn't, I can do a safe boot and it boots up with safe boot and runs fine (but slower and with no sound). My other option is to boot into the recovery section and use disk utility and reload OSX.

Ok, do I just uncheck them or click on them and hit the minus sign so they completely go away?

Ok, I did that. I rebooted and it seems to be operating normally for the moment. I never know how long it will go for, but might I say that I think it may have even booted up a tad quicker. As this has happened before, I won't get too excited just yet but this does look good.

LOCKED UP AGAIN! I am so frustrated. We were trying to upload a photo with "Photos" onto a website using Safari and it froze up.

Do you think it is necessary to remove the iTunesHelper? It is by Apple so I would think leaving it in should be Ok. What do you think??

I'm thinking along the same lines as you, but just for troubleshooting it would be worth a try to remove everything IMO.

a radical solution I know - and a bit time consuming - but you could back up to an external HDD, then perform an erase and fresh install of OS X 10.11 - then start adding the apps and files you really want back on manually.
leave off any suspect and unwanted 3rd party apps.
should fix the issue as I suspect you don't have much hair left to tear out by this time ;)
