iMac mid 2010 Ram and SSD Upgrade

Hi All,

I have a mid 2010 21,5" iMac, and I love it. It's 6 years old but still a good piece of hardware. But, as I want it to run for another 4 or 5 years I decided to invest some money and upgrade the iMac ram and storage, but I did some research and found out that some people had problems when upgrading the ram.

I need help evaluating if the following hardware is compatible with my iMac. Also, opinions are welcome!

At first I was thinking about going all Crucial:

RAM
2 sets of this http://uk.crucial.com/gbr/en/imac-(21*5-inch,-mid-2010)-imac11,2/CT8914047, totalizing in 16gb ram. Does anyone have the setup ?

How does this Crucial ssd compare with Samsung 850 Evo, keeping in mind that this mid 2010 iMac is not SATAIII compatible?

I've been running my 2010 iMac with 16gb and SSD for many years and it still runs great.

Memory and SSD choices are fine. You're getting Sata II speed which any SSD will do just fine maxing. What you are missing is the thermal sensor. If you don't use that or a software solution you'll have a fan running max speed.

Watch a replacement video a few times to get comfortable with how to get into the iMac and then make sure you have the right tools and take your time. It's very easy to pull a cable or snap something.

Would I need this sensor if I decided to replace de Optical drive instead of the HDD? Apparently its also very simple to do, and to be fair, I cant even remember the last time I used my Optical Drive. This option would also leave me my old 500gb HDD as a storage drive...

EDIT: I would need this Data doubler kit to replace de optical drive for the ssd, right?

I'm not 100% sure but I think you are right on both counts. I just went with the hdd replacement and kept the dvd drive.
