iMac mid 2011, grey screen of death?

The imac gets to the large apple icon at startup (makes the noise) then turns off to a great screen?

This started happening 3 days ago, and a week before that I changed the HDD

to a SSD. The upgrade worked really well. I did notice i the upgrade the installation bar said: "7 minutes remaining" but it took 35mins, I am not sure if this means anything.


I couldn't get it to work, I even tried putting in the older HDD and still the same thing - Grey Screen


Any help would be much appreciated.

The upgrade bar does that in several os x versions. No biggie.

I dont understand the timeline here. Did it happen before or after the ssd upgrade

Like I said, I did the upgrade a week before the issue

Can you boot from USB, TB, or FW?

Nope, not even with the previous HDD (before the upgrade).
Twice on boot a bunch of pinstripes appeared on the screen, only twice.

I was just about to mention booting from a usb...

Ok the pinstripes are the answer. Your gpu is bad. Time to take to ebay and grab another. The radeon hd 6970m 2gb is the top (apple) model for that imac
