My dad recently replaced his iMac with a new one. His old one was a 2006 core 2 duo one, with 10.5 installed. I passes it on to a friend at work as it was mostly still fine, although Safari had problems with some secure websites.
I deleted my Dad's account and set up a new Admin account and checked it was all working round at my house and my friend picked it up. When he got it home it wouldn't log in, he only gets the spinning beach ball as soon as he puts in password. He brings it into work, I notice he has changed the user name, I wonder if that has caused issues, make another account with his name, use my phone as a hotspot and everything fine.
When he takes it home the same thing happens.

Any thoughts? I have googled and can't find anything similar. His ISP is PlusNet in the UK and the issue happens with WiFi and ethernet.

Sounds like he needs to go into the router URL and set things up again.

Make sure he is not using the incorrect encryption. From memory can't recall if an iMac than old can log into WPA or WPA2 Personal, probably used WEP which is unsafe nowadays.
