iMac only reboots..never shuts down.

I recently updated to snow and since then have had problems turning off mac. I've reset pram, tried unplugging externals, tried logging out, then shutting down, but every time I hit apple-shutdown it goes black, and reboots. I can put it the screen to sleep with hot corners, but never turns off unless I manually hold down power.

thoughts anyone??

I used install discs for Snow Leopard then updated everything with Apple<software update.
 
Tried SMC, tried disk repair, neither worked. no idea what else to try. so strange.
 
worth a shot?

Replace system user interface plist file, found here:

HD/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist

Move it to your Desktop if you're afraid to delete it. Then Restart.
 
I had a MacBook Pro with this exact problem this week. Turns out it only happened when the cable from the AirPort/BT card was plugged into the logic board.

I have yet to find out which part is the culprit, but your problem might be hardware related, however strange that seems.

Give 1-800-275-2273 a shot. Even if you don't have applecare on your mac, since you just bought snow, they should be able to help you with your problem without charging you the tech support fee.
 
I tried the plist removal with no luck. I'll give the number a call tomorrow. I think tomorrow is the last day of my year long warrenty so hopefully they've got an idea.

I also realized that the sleep mode won't activate either. I'll hit apple>sleep and it goes black then boots right back up.

anyway, thanks for all your suggestions so far.
 
Imac Keeps Restarting On Its Own . . . .

after having my imac for almost 3 yrs im having problems just after being online for 5 to 10 minutes it RESTARTS on its own and it keeps doing it unless i shut it down some days it work fine and some it don't or it will work half way through the day. went to the disk utility and did everything and it didn't find a problem so what can it be. someone mention something to be bout the POWER SUPPLY, AND ANOTHER SAY ITS PROBABLY OVER HEATING. when i put the disk in it at start up and press *D* to run that test it NEVER FINISH it restarts . . =0(

also found damage files what are they ?


plz help
 
soo...called the number, basically gave me a run around..trying things I've already done. no luck.

went to mac store, they ran a few tests and all shut down fine when genius booted 10.6 from his external..so said it was a RAM issue and there could have been a scratch on the snow leopard disc and it screwed with one of the files during install.

going to try and re-install would have had him do it but needed computer this evening. so we will see how it works out.

I was having a similar problem and unchecking 'Wake for Network Access' in Energy Saver prefs solved it for me.

Then it's a hardware issue. Are you under warranty? If so, let Apple deal with it. The Genius said RAM so try taking out the other RAM module and see if it works (try putting it back and taking the other module off if that doesn't fix so both modules are tested)
 
Hello everyone,

after installing SL 10.6.1 and update to 10.6.4, my intel Imac did the same bug.
impossible to shutdown, and stay sleep.
as if the powerbutton was pushed or somethinng was keeping the mac up.
I read everything I googled, tried all the suggested solutions, but no way to fix it.

At the end, I tried to activate the function "alllow network connection to wake up" (I don't know the right translation my mac is in french) in the system preferences.
and it worked.

my imac is back !!!

I've never thought it was a hardware problem, because I've had this imac for 2 years with 10.5 and it did that the first time just after 10.6 install.

so definitely that's the solution.
click on that function and your imac will sleep again like a baby.
