Hi all :)

I have a current gen 27" iMac here, which I have hooked up to a receiver with the required cables, and the sound works.
But, if for an extended periode of time, like 15 seconds, no music or whatever is playing on my iMac, the light of the optical cable goes out. This has the annoying side-effect that for example in Adium, when someone logs on or off, I usually only hear about half of the logging on/off sound.
The same with music, sometimes a second passes before the music actually starts playing through my speakers, even though it is playing in iTunes.
I don't have this problem with the built-in speakers, nor with headphones...
What I find bizarre is, that I found an anecdote of someone with a 2008 iMac, who said that the light on his optical cable always stays on, even if there's nothing playing on his iMac...
So my question kind of is: can I force my iMac to keep that red optical light on, whether or not something is playing?

This is a feature, not a bug ;)

The optical out port when in optical connectivity mode is designed to mute itself/shut-down when it is not active.

Yeah I know it's designed like that and not a bug, but that doesn't stop it from being annoying :p
So I take it there's nothing I can do about this?

Not unless you're interested in installing a third party program that appears to only support up to Mac OS X 10.3.

Can't recall the name but a Google about keeping the optical out port on a Mac active should yield results.
