Not enough info. What are you going to use it for would at least be a start. What does your average daily use look like?

That's not a lot of info but I'm guessing you're talking about just doing office type documents for school and work. I really want to say get a base model MacBook Air. The iMac you're going to be attached to your desk so not portable and the iPad is going to have limitations of iPad OS and it's compatible applications. If you must choose between those two maybe the iPad because I suspect you'll need a computer in college classes. I would make sure it will do everything your school is wanting. You'll probably end up having to get a keyboard and trackpad/mouse, so consider that into the cost.

The limitation of the iPad is it going to be running a different version of Microsoft office so this might give you some problems but I don't know. I've never really typed up documents on my iPad. I know you can but I suspect it's missing some advanced features.

I know people who use an iPad for work but they basically use it as an endpoint for Windows terminal computing.
The iPad is still some kind of a sandbox for web-based stuff and could never replace a real computer.

Also you'd need a keyboard and trackpad cover which are terribly expensive.
A MBA would be the best choice.
