Hey guys. I'm a heavy video editor in Final Cut Pro and it's come to the point where I want to upgrade my iMac and either get a new 24 or a Mac Pro. Only thing is that the price difference is too much, so I'll probably end up going with a G5 tower. SO... my question is...

What's best? An Intel iMac or a G5 tower?

Thanks!

imac > powermac. however, if you do this for a living, and your time is valuable, i think you'd be well served to save up and buy a mac pro. a used one even.

Oh yeah completely. You should buy a MacPro, but if that is not in the works then get the iMac.

Buying a PPC PowerMac right now seems like the worst possible investment anyone could make.

I just really don't want to spend more than 1250ish.

What I might end up doing is continuing to use my MBP as my main editor and getting a MacMini with a huge display and use that for watching video. That would be the main use of the larger iMac. What do you guys think about that?

Wait up, your only need right now is to get something to watch (assuming HD) video? Yeah a MacMini works fine. I just think a G5 PowerMac is a total waste of money these days. You'd do better with the iMac, but if you're only looking to buy something that will let you watch video ... don't waste your on the G5 or the iMac.

Sorry. Let me simplify. I'm looking for these things:

A) Large screen to watch video (MacMini, iMac, Mac Pro)

B) Video editor (iMac, Mac Pro, MacBook Pro)

So what I could do is get an iMac or Mac Pro for editing and video OR get a MacMini to watch video and continue to use my MacBook Pro for video editing.

You have to give us some more info...

What do you mean by video editing?
A) You make full hd 30 minute movies
B) You mainly just tape your animals dancing in clothes with a handycam

Do you do video editing for a living?

If you answered A to question 1, and Yes to question 2, then save up, wait up, and get the current edition mac pro when the new ones come out (the price will drop)

If you answered B to question 1, and No to question 2, then get an iMac, and be ready for an onslaught of people telling you to wait, or not wait, or that their dog predicted a stock shortage in the next week....

If you answered B to question 1, and Yes to question 2, then you are a talented man and deserve a free Mac Pro.

Answer: A and Yes. I'm either gonna wait for the Mac Pro or get a MacMini with a big ass screen and continue to use my MBP.
