iMac OR Macbook (2017)

What do you guys think?

I usually use a 2015 macbook pro for my work, and now I am looking for a second computer to do my personal stuff.. like simple video editing.. not final cut pro level... and some photoshop...

I have been actively looking for a 27" monitor as my second screen.. but the last iMac doesnt support target display mode.

Anyone in the same situation as me? I am thinking to get a 27" iMac as my second screen + my personal computer.... or get the 2017 new macbook and use rest of the money to buy a nice monitor...

Hi, before I bought the Macbook Pro 2016 NTB with slowest i5, 8 GB RAM and 256 SSD I used an late 2009 iMac 27 with the fastest i7 quadcore, 16 GB RAM and a self installed 512 GB SSD, connected to an Apple 27 LED Cinema Display.

The iMac was the top of the line in 2009 and worked really well. But the slowest 2016 Macbook Pro outperforms it by a factor of 2. Not to talk about the much much better SSD performance.

So I made the switch to the cheapest Macbook Pro and made some kind of DIY iMac out of it by getting some peripherals:

• Thunderbolt 3 dock (220€)
• Sandisk Extreme 960 GB SSD with 800 (320€) Megabyte/s read and write performance
• Thunderbolt 3 PCIe Box with Nvidia 1050 GPU (420€)
• LG 4k 27 display with displayport (550€)
• Startech Thunderbolt 3 dualdisplayport adapter (90€)

This setup works pretty well, the Macbook Pro in its own is fast enough for 4k Video Editing. It can also drive its own 4k display, the LG 4k display and the Cinema display without problems. So the eGPU is just a bonus, but in no way necessary.

I did not regret what I have done. I will upgrade the components when necessary, but I will not give Apple more than 3.000€ for an iMac which will probably have GPU soldering problems again...because things are just getting to hot inside.
