Which one should i purchase, Stuck Between Both.

iMac 24" 2.8ghz or Macbook Pro 15" with 24" Cinema Display

Is the macbook pro and cinema display too expensive, for less i could get the 24" iMac 2.8ghz and be even a more powerful machine?

What kind of job do you do? Does it involve using a laptop, are you constant on the move? The first Mac I ever got was a 2GHz MacBook, its fantastic just being able to pop it out on the bus or in a coffee shop and type up some documents. Also, when over relatives, it makes it a lot easier to share your movies and photos, saying that though, I have decided to buy an iMac as I need something more powerfull. I would wait a few weka as there are some rumors of a new iMac being announced.

I am in the same boat as you. I have had an iMac for years and have bought MacBooks/MacBook Pros thinking I also needed a laptop but always ended up selling them since I would rather work on the large screen of the iMac.

.4 ghz isn't enough to make me choose the iMac over the MacBook Pro and ACD. In the long run I think the MPB and ACD setup will suit me better since I can take it with me if I want but I can also have a huge ACD on my desk where I do most of my work.

I went through the same decision last month. For me, the laptop portability isn't crucial as I don't NEED to take my computer with me. So it'd spend 90% of it's time at home hooked up to a display, keyboard and real mouse... So what's the point really? For that one trip I can either live w/o or buy a cheap XP based lappy. The fact the iMac is faster, cheaper and has a bigger monitor (since I was looking at 20" ACDs) pushed me that way. Plus, with it in our living room, the iMac looks cleaner than a lappy w/ACD would.

Basically if you'll take the laptop with you, get it. But if not, don't waste the money.

yeah that 24" cinema display is just awesome, movies look fantastic.

i would use the notebook around 60% of the time hooked up to the display.

If it is your sole computer to use, I advise the Laptop so you can have the portability, especially since the specs are so similar it really doesn't matter. When at home, use the awesome screen.

The Macbook Pro actually has a better graphics card than the iMac, so that is a plus, but obviously has a smaller hard drive.

Keep in mind that the iMac is due for an update very soon. Either way, I still recommend the laptop.

This is the setup I had but due to issues with the 24" LED I gave it up and am now waiting for the updated iMac with LED. After about 3 hours of continuous use the LED will start shifting colors as if the color profile is being changed. This strobe effect continues going on until you've allowed it to cool off. Turning down the brightness on the display solves the problem but that isn't good enough for me. I like using it at full brightness and until Apple fixes this it is an annoying problem and unacceptable to me. I exchanged the display and also tried it with another MacBook. Best I can tell from others on MacRumor's and Apple's discussion forums, it is a heat related issue and affects every display. It really sucks because that is my setup of choice.

I am not going to read all most, mainly because I am in allot of pain. But I would wait a few weeks for the next iMac. Wait till first or second week in February. If it does not come out anytime soon, don't play the waiting game.

Wait for new iMacs. iMac is great machine with lots of power but with MBP and ACD you still have portability which is big word today. If you are not scared of using more money for not so powerful machine go for it.

Do you want portability also or does it lay on your desk all the time?
