I'm a PC user and planing on switching to Mac. Originally I was set on the iMac (waiting for the refresh); however after reading numerous post about problems that people are having with their the iMac (smudges, yellowing, and/or dark marks on their screens, overheating & shouting down, loud hard drives and fans, etc.) I am a little nervous.

With the iMac, you get a beautiful 27" screen and more power for the money. I don't need a mobile computer. The computer will be for work in my home office. I primarily do word processing, cad, and updates to my web site in dreamweaver. I currently work on a dell laptop with an additional 24" monitor (I do a lot of cut and paste from previously written reports and reviewing photographs when writing a report) and was excited about having just one monitor.

So my question is...should I get a 27" iMac or a MacBook Pro. My budget is $1,500 to $1,700 (I was looking to buy a refurbished computer).

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

Imac, if you are going to be using it on your desk why buy the mobile version?

That was my original thought. I travel for business; however with todays smart phones and having cloud based files, I don't take my laptop on trips anymore. I can get more computer for a lower price if I but an iMac. My concern is the problems that I see people posting. It seams like people have more hardware problems with the iMacs than the MacBook Pros.

I rock the iMac/iPad combo. iMac and all its glorious beauty and size at my house and iPad on the road for light computing.

I could never downgrade to a MB/MBP from my iMac. I could see having one along with my iMac, but that seems like overkill.

You would probably get more bang for your buck with the iMac as well, if you're on a budget.

Definitely an iMac

Well this is iMac subforum, so maybe all of us a little biased here. I like the look and performance of an iMac. Look at that gigantic giant screen, you'd feel macbook pro is a cheapo once you get ahold of an iMac, especially the 27"

But the case is different if you travel a lot and NEED to use computer on your trip. That way, I'd go with a MBP, although not willingly or happily :(

Ask the same question on MacBook subforums, you can compare the answer then :D

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking of getting the iMac and iPad combo. All I do on my laptop when I travel is email and daily logs (not much typing). I don't need a laptop on the road.

I posted here because I wanted to hear from iMac users. Do iMac users regret buying their iMac because of some of the hardware problems. Are the hardware problems widespread or are they just a few in many?

I'm still leaning toward the iMac I played with them at the Mac store & love the screen.

Thanks again for the help.
