iMac or MacBook Pro?

Now that obviously depends entirely on whether you need to carry your computer around. If you don't then an iMac is the better value choice. If you do then you have to buy a laptop. In which case you should also consider the MacBook v MBP
I bought an Al iMac last summer because it was close to half the cost of a Mac Pro. Before that, I bought a MacBook mainly to dabble with OS X.
I have since committed 100% to the Mac, so I am buying a MacBook Pro and a 30" display this summer (pending to see what the rumored refresh brings to the table, if it happens) and selling my MacBook and iMac. Then once the Mac Pro converts to Nehalem, I will be buying one of them and retiring the MBP to portable/transport duty.

Actually, the reason I am waiting for Nehalem and buying a 30" is because I expect both to last me "forever" (until they physically fail and the repair cost is too close to the replacement cost). Same with the MacBook Pro. The extra features it offers (dedicated GPU, FW800, ExpressCard) means it should take care of me "forever". Honestly, if my original MacBook had 802.11n, I'd keep it. And I did consider just buying the MacPro Airport Card and putting it in to get 802.11n. But the Core2 Duo architecture has advantages over the Core Duo in my MacBook and the lack of FW400 and ExpressCard means that I can't upgrade her functionality.
The elegance of the iPhone is what convinced me to commit to the Macintosh ( though it helped that Office and CS3 were also available.
). I weighed the Mac Pro + 23" ACD vs. the new 24" iMac and the iMac made the better value at the time. At the time my PC was a small-form factor HP Core2 Duo with a Dell 20" widescreen LCD. I liked the iMac because it was "neat and tidy" as an all-in-one and having used 24" LCDs at work (under Windows), it was plenty big. Over the summer, I used the HP workstations at work to rip my CD collection to FLAC. That way, down the road I can easily re-convert my CD collection to new audio formats without having to re-rip. And getting back a wall of shelf space was nice.
I now wish to do this with my DVD collection and get another wall back. Plus I like the
TV concept. Now, I could rip with my iMac, but eight cores will significantly cut down the time. Plus being able to store 4-8TB internally (I'm hoping the 2TB HDDs are out by Q1 2009) is a good deal easier and faster then using FireWire/Gigabit Ethernet via an external storage drive (though I will need one of those for backup).So congratulations, Apple. I've bought into your philosophy 100%.
