Hello World.
I've recently finished repairing a 17" iMac a friend sold me. I'm sure I violated the warranty, and any chance of buying apple care - but that's alright for now, because it runs like a champ. HOWEVER - it's an older iMac. The friend I bought it from still had the box and the restore discs, and I'm now running OS X 10.3.9 - I don't know the year it came out, but it has (I believe) a 1.8 G5, and 512 Ram. No iSight built in.
This is a problem for me, because I need iTunes 10 for my iPod Touch. As you all may know, 10.3 isn't compatible with iTunes after release 7. There are other compatibility issues I've been running into, but I figure upgrading to 10.5 would fix all my problems. That's where I don't know what I'm doing. I'm looking for a low cost remedy. Something like an upgrade disc. Apple will sell me a full release for 130, but I'm thinking more along the lines of buying a newer iMac restore disc from amazon for 20. Do I need to check for PPC or intel compatibility, or does one disc do both? Will a restore disc for a newer iMac work on my older one?
Other things... I need to find an ATA hard drive. And I don't know what type of RAM or the max supported for my specific machine. Could somebody help me out with a link to find that? I'm newly registered to this site, but I've been here hundreds of times... mac buyers guide... etc. I'm impressed.

OH BTW!! The repair I did...
Some of you may have had similar problems if you had a 17" iMac G5. Over heating. In this machines life it's been "fixed" by apple twice. They put new gel under the processor and blew the dust grains out of the cooling vent. Standard fare from what I understand. I saw a DIY fix on the internet, and I have to say it was pretty easy, and it is incredibly effective.
I Installed a case fan to the back. I had to cut a hole in it, so I'm sure I voided any chance of warranty or resale... but I dropped the temps inside enough that it stops locking up. Once I get 10.5 running on it again I'll install that temperature reading program and get specifics. Before the fix it was running at almost 150 degrees... until it ruined my hard drive. The trick is fan placement. If you remove my case fan and look in the hole I cut... you see part of the hard drive, and the vent the processor heat moves through. My case fan sucks all the heat out, right there. It feels like a hair dryer back there! It isn't pretty to look at, but when the iMac is facing front, like usual - you can't tell any difference.
