iMac overheating

Hey guys,

I have a worry/problem with my iMac 24" (3.06GHz). Ive had my iMac for about 5 days now, I called Apple Care before I went out and switched it off, the guy that I talked to told me to unplug all the cables, wait 15 seconds and then turn it back on. He then said to restore energy saver defaults, as this apparently can reset the fan too. So I did that before I went out, and now Im back and it's been running for a good hour or so I checked the temps now and they are as follows:

HD: Macintosh HD 52
CPU A: 41
CPU Heatsink: 41
AirPort Card: 56
Ambient: 23
GPU: 48
GPU Diode: 52
GPU Heatsink: 45

All are in Celsius, My friend's iMac (20" model) when just doing normal stuff is about 44 Celsius.

It's also worth a mention to say that I have my Power cable plugged into an older adapter with 4 plug sockets. Could this be the problem? Ive ran my smaller TV off it for about 3 years and it seems to be fine, but the iMac powe cable is stupidly short that it would just not get to my power adapter which is plugged into my other power adapter that my iMac is in.

Sorry I cant help but can i ask are you happy with the machine apart from heat is it fast? How do you get your temp?

I love it, It's the best thing I've EVER owned. It can play ALL the latest games, I can program iPhone/iPod apps and do all that stuff. It's one of the fastest machines Ive been on. I love it, Love, Love, Love. There isn't a word to say how happy I am with my iMac

I've had my mac just under a month now and these are my regular temps, even with the fan speeds slightly bumped with smcFanControl

Here are my temps now after 7 hours from boot.

My HDD has been at this temp for a good while now, seems to be as hot as it gets. 56 Celsius to 58 Celsius. My CPU goes up to 68 Celsius when rendering video, but that should be expected.

Mate, those temps seem to be fine to me (I'm no expert mind you), these are my temps after 2 1/2 hours of use under OsX (mainly iTunes, Photoshop and stuff like that):-

Ambient: 22 (after 2 1/2 hrs gaming (Crysis) in XP - 24)
HD: Macintosh HD 46 (after 2 1/2 hrs gaming (Crysis) in XP - 52)
HD Bay 1: 42 (after 2 1/2 hrs gaming (Crysis) in XP - 47)
CPU A: 35 (after 2 1/2 hrs gaming (Crysis) in XP - 37)
CPU A: 37 (after 2 1/2 hrs gaming (Crysis) in XP - 36)
GPU: 40 (after 2 1/2 hrs gaming (Crysis) in XP - 43)
GPU Diode: 46 (after 2 1/2 hrs gaming (Crysis) in XP - 49)
GPU Heatsink: 38 (after 2 1/2 hrs gaming (Crysis) in XP - 42)
Power Supply: 50 (after 2 1/2 hrs gaming (Crysis) in XP - 55)
AirPort Card: 33 (after 2 1/2 hrs gaming (Crysis) in XP - 36)
Optical Drive: 38 (after 2 1/2 hrs gaming (Crysis) in XP - 40)

But bear in mind that I have got my fans revved up using SMCfancontrol (CPU Fan 2300 / H/Drive 3600 / Optical 2200 - My Gaming settings when I use XP). When I have the fans set to my default speeds (1500 / 2100 / 1700) the temps may be a couple of degree's higher.

At first I was a bit worried about my temps, but after checking other forums and other peoples comments on their temps I found that what I was getting seemed to be in the norm.

I just set SMCfancontrol to your settings, and instantly I can hard the fans working. I'll post in 10 minutes to state my temps.

Those temps aren't high. That's what mine at with safari mail dashboard and finder. I wouldn't be concerned.

Okay, thanks guys. I just ran that fan app and had a mad rush and thought, lets CRANK THIS BABY and put the rpm to 5200 HDD and it wouldn't stop the fan. It went crazy. I just followed what the Apple genius said to unplug the power, wait a few seconds and then turn it back on. All working A'Okay. And after that massive Fanage my HDD is at 52 LMAO!

No, because upwards of 40-50 degrees on a light load is perfectly normal. On my laptop (MacBook) the top temperature is 47 degree's celcius for my wireless card.

Your temps are in the normal range. The procedure that you performed is called an SMC reset.
