Hey all,

Here's a video of my imac starting safari and firefox. Can you please comment on the performance?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGcYCA2Nz48

Note that the browser is not done loading until the text on the page is displayed.

I have a 2.1 Ghz G5 Imac with 2.5 GB ram, 35GB free HD space. Is this kind of performance normal?

I'd like to upgrade to Leopard, but if it's going to be even worse than it is now, I probably won't.. (I just showed the browsers, but photoshop for example is tremendously slow).

(This was recorded after a fresh startup).

I had to post this since I watched that leopard video demo and it's just so snappy (new imacs..)

Well, this is just after startup and it's getting even slower after alot of usage/open apps etc.. Still, I already found that to be quite a long wait.

Anyone done any testing with regards to leopard on G5 (performance)? I'd like to see some videos of that.

"I had to post this since I watched that leopard video demo and it's just so snappy (new imacs..)"

i doubt the screen grab from the vid is from the same computer to be honest.
Leopard is meant to be faster than tiger on newer computers, due to optimisation, new finder and better multithreading. safari should be quicker opening after the 1st opening after a reboot. looked ok in the vid, the page loading obviously depends on your connection too.

Your video looks pretty slow to me. Has it always been like that? How are you connecting to the internet?

Have you tried cleaning caches etc. with Leopard? What version of OS X are you running? What's in your Activity Monitor? How many fonts are activated? What are your internet settings?

I'm running 10.4.10. It's been slow like that for quite a long time. Just wanted to know if this is normal performance for a 2.1 Ghz G5.

I have cable internet. Pages load very fast (after the app has started).

I've already run those cleaner tools but that doesn't seem to help.

Btw, the tv forecast widget had high CPU since it was just updating.. Right now it's 0% CPU.

I too noticed the imac in the demo loaded things ridiculously fast. I also suspected the screen grabs are from a dual proc, quad-core mac pro :) Another (perhaps more likely) possibility is they loaded the imac with ram, already ran the applications used in the demo once so they would remain in memory. Launching an application the 2nd time is always much faster.

Example.. 1st time I launched firefox = four bounces. 2nd time I launched firefox = one bounce.

Everything opened near instantly with my iMac 1.8 G5 with 512mb of ram... although running the actual program does get incredibly choppy

That seems slow to me. My G4 Powerbook 1.5 GHZ 1.25 GB of memory opens Safari a lot faster.

Of course, with my iMac Core 2 Duo is even better, but yeah my Powerbook is even way faster than that video opening safari.

The screenshots were from when the system was already running for a few hours.. The video was from right after a system startup (no dashboard running, no other apps).

And as I said, it was extremely unusual for that tv show widget, it was just fetching the newest data would be my guess.

Upgraded to leopard (clean install) and it now loads (and displays google) in 1.5 bounces first time. Second time under a bounce :)
