iMac Potential Problems

i just purchased a iMac G5(EARLY version, no isight)....the guy i purchased it from,mention to me theres bad RAM, (768 Total...512 is the bad one). no problem....i noticed the when im just using it, it just freezes...sometimes its obsessive, other then that everything is good.now when i reboot/restart the machine i see the gray screen wit a folder blinking with a globe and then a question mark, and then the finder logo, just blinking.2 questions....What is the blinking for??....and is this because of the RAM???

Hmmmm, sounds like the ram, possible other hardware. hardrive etc.

one question, why would you buy it with bad ram

actually what happened was he was selling it with just the 256MB...so when i got it i noticed it was moving faster then expected and thas when i noticed it was 768.he then mentioned to me like a week later that he left it in there and it was bad.i havent realized any letdowns or anything till recently.

Is it the network globe with a folder? I thought that was for netbooting... Could be just not enough RAM to boot. What operating system are you using? See if single user mode will work, see where verbose mode stops loading (or if it will get that far).

Single user boot- Hold down command-S
[caution, CLI!!! type 'exit' if you haven't changed much and see if you get the same icons, or just 'reboot'.]

Verbose logging- cmd-V


Zap the pram- cmd-option-p-r

If you never get any further, try taking out ram. It also sounds like the computer is trying to netboot (which is particularly picky about ram) so bypass this with by selecting a different volume.

I Swear, it felt like you was just talking Japanese.i have no clue but i can tell you its a Blinking Globe inside the folder blinking back and forth with a question mark, after a while the finder logo starts blinking with the question back and forth.


P.S.....im using tiger 10.4.6

Switch startup disk: After booting it up, go to System Preferences, click on Startup Disk, and then select the Mac OSX 10.4.6, on Macintosh HD . The next time you start up you shouldn't get the globe folder flashing.

Guess that was it..i did not do it....any reason why it changed itself and what it means?lol

Mmm, wait, I don't quite get it. If that 512 RAM stick is bad, you should really remove it right now. If it's bad, it will certainly contribute to instability in your system....
