I received my iMac Pro all extras (18 cores, 128 GB RAM, 4 TB and Vega 64) and installed it on Monday. While working on my previous machine (a 2010 Mac Pro), the machine launched its screensaver and then went to sleep (as expected). Suddenly, the fans started to run full speed. The machine was unresponsive to keyboard or mouse. I did a hard restart (pressing the on-off button until the machine turned off). The machine never restarted. I don't even see the Apple logo on the boot screen. When I press the on-off button, I hear a whisper inside the Mac and nothing more. Every now and then, the same procedure gets the fans running full speed again. I tried to boot in target disk mode but nothing happens. I conclude that the most powerful Mac ever seems to still be underpowered to run a screensaver without dying. And that 2000 USD per hour which are valid only for the first 6 hours of use does not look like a too bad business model. Has anyone experienced a similar issue with an iMac Pro 18C?

Eh, contact Apple. It might be "interesting" to learn if a external monitor works, but you paid for a fully working computer, not a collection of salvageable parts.

has applecare rebuffed you?

?

No, I will have to admit I watched the Jared Polin series of videos on the iMac Pro issues more than a week ago so my memory might not be the best but if I recall in summary Polin’s iMac Pro arrived broken and he was upset at the fact that Apple told him he would be placed in back of the queue for a new iMac Pro and there was a bit of a wait. Apple got wind of his complaint from a video and shipped him a replacement one right away.

Yes. 10-Core iMP worked for 6 weeks before logic board went out. took 6 weeks to receive a replacement machine that only worked for 4 weeks before it hung during a Logic Pro session and was non-responsive. After forced reset the machine would not power on. Reset SMC with AppleCare tech and iMP still didn't respond to power button.

Both machines are/were running through a Furman M-8Dx power conditioner. In a well-ventilated room, climate controlled 75 degrees. Both machines did run extremely hot, which seems obvious to be what killed them. I'm not to proud to say this could be the result of operator-error, but i've never had a machine crap out like this...even in the same situation/room. Seems like there may be a hardware design issue with these machines?

Replacement machine is currently being repaired, hoping i'll get a long life out of it this time. Pretty bummed on these iMPs though.

Believe or not mine works just fine (and I even have a few CPU cores less to handle the screensaver). So I conclude that the business model might be actually working.

Have you considered contacting Apple Care? But I agree that making a screensaver-gate youtube video is actually more fun.
