So I have been thinking about how to replace my 2019 i9 iMac to something that has better cooling. I was thinking of the base Mac Pro with the W5700X as expandability is also a plus.

However, since the base iMac Pro is now 10-cores, how does the Vega 64X compare to the Vega 48? I plan on gaming on this computer as a secondary task. My goal is 2560x1440 at 144 FPS on my 144Hz monitor. My GTX 1080 can achieve this, does the Vega 64X match the GTX 1080 performance (non Ti version)?

I play games like Satisfactory, Doom, DBZ Kakarot, Final Fantasy X, Persona 4 Golden, Halo, Borderlands and more indie games like Factorio and Terraria.

To be honest, the solution with such a replacement looks extremely strange to me.

You described the secondary task in detail in the form of games, but you did not say a word about the primary task for which you need a computer. If, for example, you are editing video on new codecs, you vitally need new Navi video cards like 5700.

But answering your question: yes, Vega 64X is generally similar to 1080 and 48 at the same time without critical differences, but you need to take into account some features.

There are single tests of this Vega 64X and almost all testers say that the performance in practice (in games in particular) does not differ between the iMac versions of Vega 56, 64. At the same time, Vega 48 surprisingly shows a slightly lower performance relative to 56, and in some cases, on the contrary - it works a little more efficiently (as well as 56 in relation to 64).

In my opinion, it makes no sense to change iMac 2019 to iMac Pro 2017 due to cooling considerations, and even for games... Unless you need other advantages of iMac Pro, but iMac 2020 has already leveled almost all of these advantages with its appearance.
