iMac Problem - Please Help

Hello Everyone,

I'm having an unusual problem with my iMacG5 (isight) . All the ventilation ports on my imac are clogged up with dust and I want to take the computer apart to clean it out so that it doesnt overheat and slow down as it has been doing. Does anyone have any idea what size of torx screwdriver I need to take this baby apart or have any experience in taking one apart that could give me a few pointers on which side to pull onto?

Please note that it is the G5 17 inch isight model which is built differently than earlier G5 iMacs.

I had the EXACT same problem with my iMac G5 20". I recommend you take it to an Apple certified guys,though. I took it to a place closed to me and they didn't charge me a cent because nothing was broke.

Thanks for the heads up, i might take it to apple. I looked at that link and that computer is the iMac G5 non isight version which is a lot easier to open than mine. The isight imac has a special opening procedure not to break the camera cables and the phillips screws were replaced by torx screws which are more uncommon

After Googling, heres a quote from the user manual for the G5 iMac w/ iSight. Sadly, I could not find any info how to open it.

Warning: Do not attempt to open your iMac G5. If your iMac G5 needs service, consult the service and support information that came with your computer for instructions about how to contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple for service. Your iMac G5 does not have any user-serviceable parts, except the memory.

Yeah i saw that, was hoping someone who does apple repairs could give me a couple pointers, i used to build PCs and i worked in a physics lab for a while before switching to biology so i'm not totally unexperienced. Just didnt want to go blind into it.

I don't know about that model, but make sure you have an anti static wrist band. It couldn't be more dangerous than opening up an iMac G3 with the CRT. Just don't touch any metal parts that are important (don't fry them with static). They won't know you opened it up if you don't break something.
