iMac problems/tips for buying?

I was really stoked to get a new Alu iMac, but then I started seeing threads and such (Not only on this site but on many others as well) about single pixel lines and the LCD's being somewhat difficient. I then also saw that the Alu iMac was released on Jan. 10 2006, which means there will most likely be an update soon. Please tell me if the single pixel lines problem is still a big issue, or any other issues with the LCD's a new buyer should know about.

Maybe opinions on when the new iMac is comming out, or how different it will be etc.
 
I am also wondering about issues like this. If there are problems with it I just may get one of the older white iMac. What are your thoughts?

A huge number of iMacs turn out great. There is nothing to worry about. The Macrumors Effect is what you're experiencing which basically states that a much higher percentage of people with Macs with defects post threads about these problems. While the people who are perfectly happy with their machines are never heard of.

Many, many, many people (including me) are very happy with their iMacs. Go get one!
 
Thanks for the posts guys, i guess i was just getting a bit paranoid when i saw alot of posts like this ... Of course its not all the posts :) so it might be say a percentage of 1- 50000 or something for defective imacs... (estimate).

Anyways, thanks again helps ease the decision.

bobsbarricades, no worries :) If we can solve 2 questions in one thread, then thats great. Btw, most of the posts I've seen are about the old white imac 17" ones. Those are the ones ive read the most about with the lcd problems.
 
I have an Alu iMac (mid 2007) too. I love it, it's great.

You are mostly going to hear from users having problems on forums like this.

The vast majority that do NOT have problems, are unlikely to post.

I only lurk around to learn new things and keep updated with what's going on!

Go and buy it, and enjoy it! :)
 
I wanted to move from the PC to Macs but held off till Leopard was out and the freezing problem was solved.

My 24" iMac arrived on December 28 and, though I'm still on the proverbial learning curve, I'm very pleased with it. The screen is free of gradients and the system is nicely responsive. It is also (and I never thought I'd say this about a computer) quietly elegant.

There's never a 'right' time to buy but, if you are inclined to get a new iMac, I can see no reason why you shouldn't go ahead.

Try August 2007. No-one knows when there will be an update. At some point, they'll upgrade to using the mobile Penryn inside the iMac but whether we're talking weeks or months, no-one knows. I'd be very doubtful if it looks any different though since the design only changed in August - it should just be an internals upgrade.

I had a 24" one (recently nicked) which was perfect so not all of them have problems.

As for when to buy it, if you need it now, buy it now. It's still going to be a great computer when the upgrades finally do come - if you have something else you can use, then wait but bear in mind that there will always be something new coming up so eventually you'll just have to bite the bullet.

People come to Forums to resolve problems. A Forum is kind of like the " Service Department " of a car dealership, or to put it in Apple Perspective a " Genius Bar " of an Apple Store.

If you stand around the Genius Bar you will hear a disproportionate number of 'issues'. If you stand around the Software Display you may hear from a disproportionate number of people who never have an issue. In order to get a true picture you'd have to stand in both places collecting data.

You have to keep it in perspective.

Personally I love my new 24" iMac, we like it so much we went out and bought another one for 'family use'. In both cases they were tested at the store before I took them home because, after all I read of " all the problems " on the forums. Neither unit had any issues noted.

BUYING ADVICE: Go to an Apple Store, have them unpack and fire up the iMac you are going to buy BEFORE you take it home. This way you insure it has no 'issues'.
 
My ALU iMac 20 inch 2.0 is one fantastic computer - the screen, everything is first rate. Only problems have been with Leopard/wifi which was seriously crap for 6 weeks but strangely seems to be less of a problem recently. I sold my MBP to buy this and do not regret it at all.
