Imac processor upgrade - 24-inch

Hello everyone,

First thank you for all the good advises and solutions that you shared on this site, that helped several times.

Well this is the first time that I couldn't find the answer to my mac question on macrumors, so I registered and am posting.

I have an Imac 24 inch Intel Core 2 Duo 2,4 ghz and I would like to upgrade the processor to Intel Quad Core i7 870 2.93GHz 8MB OEM CPU LGA1156. I would like to know if this is possible. I found on ebay a seller that is selling these Quad core i7 2,93ghz processors click on the link to see the page. Some of you might think, what in the world are you doing that requires this much processing power, well I am an architect so I design a lot of graphics, 3D art and a lot more; so any process upgrade that I could add into my imac would help me get home a bit earlier every day :)

I have few questions and I would be grateful for answers you might be able to provide:

  1. Can I upgrade my current processor to the processor Intel Quad Core i7 870 2.93GHz 8MB OEM CPU LGA1156?
  2. I understand the processor on imac is not soldered in, right?
  3. Upgrading the processor, it would not allow me to upgrade the memory form 4gb to 16gb right?
  4. I know that with memory upgrades osx detects the upgrade automatically so you don't have to reinstall anything, would this be the case also with the processor upgrade?
  5. And the last question is there any way that I can expand the memory capacity from 4gb to 8 or 16gb?

No, incompatible chipsets. Even if they were compatible, apple solders CPUs to the motherboard, meaning they cannot be user replaced.
 
1. No, you cannot. Your iMac's CPU uses socket P while the CPU you linked uses LGA 1156, they are not compatible.

5. Your iMac unofficially supports up to 6GB of RAM

Sounds like your best bet is to sell it and grab a brand new i7...

The CPU is socketed but there aren't many parts that you could replace it with and they are extremely hard to find and have hefty price tags

Too bad that I can't upgrade the processor or the motherboard; but good to know that I could get upto 6 gb memory, this is something I didn't know.

I will probably wait that the usb 3 hits the imacs then I'll grab one of the imac i7 s.

So I probably have to wait a while before usb 3.0 hits the imacs, does anyone have any on info on this?

We will know more in few days as IDF is being held between September 13th and 15th. There was a rumor that Intel will add USB 3.0 for Cougar Point (next gen chipset) but it was just a rumor. Earlier reports have been saying that we won't see USB in Intel chipset before Patsburg in mid 2011 and that chipset won't be seen in iMac. Extremely hard to say, so many things are unknown
