Hey Guys!

Im planning to get a imac in about a weeks time. i have a few questions about which model to choose and installing RAM (more on this later)

I'm not that sure how the 2.4GHz (current generation) Imac is for some light gaming, does anyone know what games it can cope up to? I want to games like Call Of Duty 4 and The Sims.

Also i want to install some extra RAM and boost it from 1GB to 4GB. will this make difference or am i wasting my money? does installing RAM void the warranty?

I also want to install windows xp for the odd thing or two. i dont know what program to use parralells or VMware? any recomendations ?

And how would i go about making a partition, what size would it be?

as i think you have probally gatherd by now i am new to Mac and i dont really have a  So thanks for all the help and aswers :apple:

Get the 2.66 if u are getting the 20" but i would get the 2.8 24" just cuz the 24" screen look so good

Get it from http://www.crucial.com/ and u can put in more ram but if u take it to the Apple store u may have to take it out and put the old back in to get service

Go for Boot camp. iTs easy, and free and as u said u want to game and emulation(ie: parallels or VM) will not do that well
And how would i go about making a partition, what size would it be?
For gaming with Boot cam and a 500GB HDD i would go with no less than 30GB but no more than 80GB

see bold^^^

And I'll put in a plug for the refurbs. Getting an iMac 24" refurb will save you money and you'll get a gorgeous machine with full warranty. Mine came in flawless. Do get your RAM from Crucial or OWC, though.

I second the refurb.

http://store.apple.com/us/product/FA878LL/A

Its $100 more than the 2.4 20", yet you get a much nicer screen, a bigger hard drive, and a better graphics card.

As for XP, use the free bootcamp software that comes installed.

Also bump up the RAM to 4gb. This will make a huge difference. It does not void the warranty and is extremely easy.

Hey Thanks You guys for the replies, any more past problems or advice:)

thanks

EDIT: i am wanting to purchase new, i found a good deal. the 2.4GHz imac for £750

Remember that if you buy from John Lewis you get a free two year warranty. They will price match shops in the local area also.

The 24" screen is amazing - I would go for a refurb.

Either way you will be more than happy.
