looked on the Tech Spec of the iMac apple site, but can't see what RAM modules come standard on the 24", i presume it's 2 x 512Mb? If i want to upgrade RAM to 2Gb from a 3rd party, does that mean all the RAM that is pre-installed has to be dumped?
many thanks

Yep, it says so right on the Apple Store - not sure how you missed it. Basic config is 1 GB (2 x 512MB), up to 3 GB. There are only 2 RAM slots, so yes, you would need to get rid of the stock RAM and put in 2 x 1GB. Or 1 2GB stick with one of the stock 512 MB sticks would technically work I suppose...

It's weird how the 2GB kit (2x1gb) for a MB/MBP and the new iMac have diff. part numbers. It's the same stuff, right?

edit: the ram from apple
