I ordered 2x8 DRAM from Crucial for my mid-2011 iMac. Must I remove the orig. 4 GB RAM, or will the machine work well with 20 GB RAM?

Apple recommends two modules of the same size be installed for maximum performance. So yes, it should work with:
2x8 GB = 16 GB
2x2 GB = 4 GB
-------------------
Total = 20 GB

This assumes a 27 inch model; don't know about the 21 inch.

Thanks for your informed response. I appreciate it.

It is the 27-inch model. Sounds like I'll have 20GB until I expand later this year. Thanks for responding.
