I am long overdue to getting a new computer and obviously I've been looking to get a new Mac for a very long time. I have really been needing a desktop and the only one I looked at was the Mac Pro, mainly because I need the power and I would be able to upgrade it in any way I wanted to in the future. I never really looked at the iMac when they used Core 2 chips however, I have been seriously looking at the iMac since Apple put a real desktop chip (i5/i7) in there. As much as I would love to still get the Mac Pro, I have made up my mind and will go with the iMac as it will be more than powerful enough for what I'll be using it for (heavy amounts of photo editing and everyday usage).

Now I realize that Apple just updated the iMac and I would love to go ahead and buy this rev. However, I will not be ready to make the purchase until probably late November or early December. I told myself that if I don't make the purchase by January that I'll just wait until Apple updates the iMac and buy the rev after this one.

So here's my question... Judging how Apple is not making updates to Macs as often as they did a few years ago, basically they're making updates about once every year now, and take into account Intel's rollout of new CPUs, if I don't buy my iMac by January, when will the next update likely take place?

iMacs are still updated about every 8 months (226 days on average). https://buyersguide.macrumors.com//#iMac

Re-evaluate around the time you need to buy and look for rumors.

I did exactly that. The next likely time Apple might make a refresh is in the spring but who really knows right? And like I previously mentioned and as Sammy points out, Intel is looking to release a new wave of chips possibly as soon at Q4 2010.

Right now is not a good time to buy a power house desktop. It was last year when the i7's came out. Sandy Bridge, USB 3, lower priced SSD, new OS, possibly Blu Ray support, more apps written to take advantage of multiple cores...are all just around the corner.

Go i5 refurb or go base i3.

What you said here is exactly why I gave myself the deadline of January of when to buy this current iMac rev otherwise I'll wait until Apple updates the iMac again.

As pointed out by another user, I clearly cannot afford the latest and greatest and that I will never own anything because I'm just waiting for the next best thing...... Oh and I should get a life.

That aside, if I had my way I would go ahead and order a Mac Pro that Apple just announced.
