I heard that there is a rumor that apple will refresh the imacs again sometime in late september/october, lowering the price and doing some minor upgrades, same thing that happened with the macbook line. Do any of you think it might be true?

That would be good timing, and gives something to talk about at a press event just after release.

No. March update was already minor one so next one must be something more major but because new and better hardware don't exist yet, we have to wait. Late '09 is possible if Arrandales are on time. Apple never releases hardware when they release OS...

I hate to tell you, but quad core processors cool enough to use in the iMac were available for over a month before the last update.

Yes, I knew that. Apple didn't use them. Mobile quads have been on market since August 2008. Maybe Apple don't want low clocked quads vs high clocked duals (Megahertz Myth). Arrandales are bringing something new for iMacs if Apple uses them. Nowadays you can build quad-core PC for 500€ and Apple offers only dual-core in high-end iMac which costs 4 times more. I'm not saying that new ones will have quad-core but Apple has to do something for iMac

Based on the rumors, it seems a price drop may come for Christmas Season. I'm not expecting an actual update until early next year with Arrandale Processors. Quad's would be nice, but I don't think they are coming. Clarksfield doesn't offer enough clock speed for Apple.

The iMac lately has been on a 10/11 month cycle.

Don't expect a redesign either, since Apple has modeled the notebooks after the iMac, so I don't think the design is changing just yet.

Wishlist for Fall 2009 or winter 2010 iMac

I also don't anticipate iMacs in 2009. I own a late 2007 Aluminum 24" iMac 2.4 gig 4gigs of ram...This is what I need to justify an upgrade. YMMV

LED backlit 24" screen
Graphics card with 1 gig of ram (any will suffice)
Core i7 (two or four core, don't matter to me)

If I can get those three, I will buy a new iMac. Until then, I can't justify the cost considering the iMac I have now (2 yrs old this winter).

As a bonus I would like
Auto focus Camera
Wireless mouse and keyboard for free (with 24" model)
More USB plugs
USB 3.0 (would be a surprise even though Apple lead USB to mass adoption)
ExpressCard/34 (for SATA HDs, or multi-card readers)

The justification for the camera and the free wireless keyboard and mouse is that the Imac is getting less appealing at its current price point, it really needs some of my listed bonuses for my to feel justified in buying an iMac.

The justification for the ExpressCard slot is similar to what I said about the other bonus items plus...
I consider the 24" iMac the "Pro" consumer desktop and much like the 17" Macbook Pro I expect the ExpressCard 34.

The iMac 24" buyer should have access to a solution such as this:

well the reason i made the thread is because i plan on buying an imac in late september/october when snow leopard is released. I'd be pissed if i buy it, and then a week or 2 later, they get refreshed.

I've been waiting forever to get this mac, i would have gotten it a while ago, but i am waiting on snow leopard, and i am hoping the refresh happens sometime in october, because i don't want to have to wait any longer.

i don't necessarily need the imac now, but i can only stay patient for so long lol.

thats one thing i don't like about apple, they don't announce refreshes, they just do it. so if you bought a computer the week before, too bad.

doesn't make sense to use quads before SL is out. it has been a problem for years where each additional CPU or core doesn't give you that much performance increase.

once SL is released i wouldn't be surprised to have quad core everywhere

a new GPU would give you better performance increase than a quad core CPU. even in SL since the apps have to be written for multi-core as well.

if you buy a higher end imac with a discrete GPU you can always upgrade it when newer ones come out

I was in the same boat before I bought mine. Waited 6 months for update and it turned out to be bad one. Don't expect something significant.

It doesn't help if OS supports multi-core but application doesn't. Higher clocked duals are faster in many situations.

How GPU will speed up? It's only used in games and in 3D editing + Motion. OpenCL is overhyped, there are no apps that supports it.

anandtech did a test on the mac pro graphics performance with different GPU's. if you have a larger monitor then a better GPU will give you better performance since it all runs through the graphics card these days. Same thing as in Vista where everything runs through the GPU, even for the desktop.

Looks like you'll be living with your iMac for several years.

1GB ram, ain't happening for several years.
Corei7, there is no two core and the i7 is a desktop CPU.

Wireless mouse and keyboard for free (with 24" model)
Why would you want that hacked off wireless junk?

USB 3.0 (would be a surprise even though Apple lead USB to mass adoption)
2011 at the earliest, in the Mac Pro. Probably not until 12 when the iMac gets it.

Nope.

imac refresh in fall with release of snow leopard?
Would make absolute sense for me if both would come out together this time!

At least I guess new hardware will be available at the release date of Windows 7.
I know so many people who buy iMacs for their Windows. Yes, you read right!
