iMac (Retina 5k, 2017, 27inch) freezing and rebooting

Hey guys,

my iMac froze under heavy load once (never happened before), and since then, it keeps rebooting all the time. Sometimes after few minutes after bootup, sometimes even during bootup. Doesn't even have to be under load. Usually it takes between 1 - 5 minutes for the freezing and reboot to occur.

Have you ever had similar problem? The device is not under warranty anymore, since we don't have official App Stores here in Slovakia and it was bought as a company asset, which means only 1 year warranty period.

It was upgraded to 32Gb as an option provided by the shop that we bought the iMac at, right at the moment we bought it (so even if it was somehow related to that, iMac was working fine for 1 year and 3 months until now). I understood it as an expansion with original Apple modules. I can snap pictures of those RAM modules if it would help.

Machine Check Architecture report indicates a hardware issue. Have you tried this yet?

Yes, I did, it reports no errors :/

Last crash I got produced different error dump, with something alongst the lines of "
CATERR Detected! No MCA data found". Is that something that indicates anything to you guys? What I have found so far is that most of the people that had this issue got their logic board replaced by Apple.

It's a pickle of a situation with no Apple Store you could take it into. I doubt anyone here has the hardware expertise to diagnose this properly.

If this was happening to me, it would be a process of elimination as I try to eliminate as many variables as possible.

1. Completely reinstall MacOS.
2. Remove any extra hardware attached to the Mac.
3. Disable everything (ethernet, bluetooth, wifi)
4. Turn off internal monitor (ctrl-shift-eject) and remote into it from another computer.
5. Remove all the RAM, install only a single stick in to see if I can isolate it to a bad RAM stick.

That error is caused by hardware, so the logic board issue is likely. Hopefully it's the RAM. Best of luck @shreedx!

I already reinstalled the MacOS, so that I can tick of the list The point with removing RAMs is a good one, will try that. Its possible one of the modules is faulty.

I cannot tell if these are Apple original parts or some crap that the company installed (the upgrade did cost 700 euros, so I assumed it was original).

I'd remove the non-factory RAM first, just run with the 2 Apple DIMMs.

Tried that, it was still crashing, but since the error dumps aimed at CPU core #3, i tried setting the nvram params to use only 1 cpu core (and later on 2) and that seems to have resolved the problem for now (even though I basically lost processing power of 2 cores for now). So I assume core #3 is faulty and was causing the crashes. Now I am trying to find out if 1) there is a way to block just one core 2) it is possible to replace the i5 for a new one / better one at home Thanks a lot guys!

Hey Y'all, I'm having the same issue with my iMac. After a few minutes on, the iMac freezes, become unresponsive and reboot. and that's the message it appears.

I have factory reset the iMac, replaced the memory and nothing seems to stop it of rebooting.

Any tips in how to solve this issue?
