iMac Scratching CDs and can't partition

Hi, I have an iMac bought last year. Everything works perfect apart from few things...

First of all I tried to burn a CD yesterday and I had these errors:

And when I eject the CD it scratches the CD in straight lines. I still have warranty, do you think I should take it to the place I bought or is it something i can fix myself?

Also I tried to install XP and used boot camp but when I try to partition I get this error:

What do you think the problem is? Do I really have to erase the disk and restore? If I take mac for cd drive repair will they fix that issue as well?

The reason you can't repartition the drive is because it's most likely heavily fragmented. Sometimes running a defrag (with something like Drive Genius) can resolve the issue. Sometimes it doesn't resolve it enough and you need to back up and erase the drive.
 
Thanks.. I read about it last nite and people whose CDs are scratched are all experiencing hardrive problem and mostly return it back. So i'm going to give them a call now and send it back as I still have warranty. Will let you know how it went.

For partition do you think Drive Genius is my solution? I normally use Onyx but I'm not an expert on Mac so don't know if it does fragmentation or not.

I;m taking iMac back on Monday to the place I bought. Shall I backup before I hand it over. I'm definitely taking photos!

YES!!! The answer to "should I back up" is ALWAYS yes, and maybe twice. Backing up should happen even if your computer just sits on your desk. You don't have to knock the computer off the desk for the HDD to fail. Macs all come with Time Machine now, so there is no reason NOT to back up.

Also, if you bought it from Apple, you are taking it to the right place. If you bought it anywhere else, you should really consider having Apple ship it for you to Apple directly, they should cover shipping. Warranty work is always best done by the warranty provider.

One more note. You may be able to use Drive Genius to defragment the Hard drive and avoid erasing and backing up and such. But this takes a LONG time, and if you have the space to back up and partition before restoring, that is the best course of action.

I doubt if you can "just take it back".

But wherever you take it, they will look at and try to fix it if its still under warranty.

Your partitioning issue is easily fixed. You just need to clone to a backup drive, reformat to Mac OS Extended Journaled then clone back.

Then try again.

As for your DVD drive, how often do you get the error when burning CDs? All the time? Once? Every other one? Every 10? What happens when you try different media? Maybe this is one time thing?
 
Thanks for the answers, appreciated... I'm backing up at the moment and will try partitioning once restored. So this looks fine at the moment, software problems are always easier than hardware problems..

Anyway, when it comes to scratching; I inserted a blank CD this morning (it was all nice and shiny) and ejected stright away and there were 3 or 4 straight line scracthes on the CD. Now I put the CD back and now burning my wedding photos.. Let's see... There you go, same error (top two pics). Now this is annoying. I'm definitely taking it back on Monday.

The place I bought is a well respected store, and I asked them 3 times and they said they'll send it to Apple. Shall I give a call to apple and ask if that store actually send it.

Any other suggestions before I hand it over?

You should still think about that external.

$35 for an external FW CD/DVD thats 3X as fast as your internal is a great deal.
 
Update:
I just fixed the partition problem. I restore the HD and set up again with time machine, I can do partition now.
Will take the Mac to the store today for the DVD drive problem. Some people say I should wait till the new Macs arrive and they mostly replace it with a new one with the DVD drive issues?

did you have similar experiences?

UPDATE:
I just got my imac back, they've replaced the optical drive. It works perfect now I can burn... It took 15 days and they were really nice and friendly. I decided to extend my applecare for another 2 years, worth every penny.
No scrathes or dents on the computer.

Thank you Apple again for taking care of your customers.
