imac screen problems

I have recently been having problems when waking my iMac.

Everything seems to wake up fine, you can hear the fan going and the mouse powered, but the screen doesn't turn on.

I then have to power it down with the power button and restart.

Is this a common problem, I have had my iMac for a while now and this is the first time its happened.

Is there anything that I should do or check before I contact apple?
