I'm planning to make the move to Apple and have visited our local store several times to test drive the iMac. Size and budget wise I like the 2.4G 20" model. I've also read posts re 20 vs 24 (glare, brightness, etc) and also read the post regarding upcoming enhancements to the iMac. My questions are...Has apple made any changes to the 20" display in the past year? (not just white plastic to aluminum trim). And is there any chance the display will be enhanced in the near term?

They just barely made an update to the screen with the last revision. But, I would think that there might be another revision coming soon as Apple is trying to face in LED backlights.

The new Al iMacs are better in every way except one. Apple degraded the panels on the 20" from S-IPS, which the 24" still use, to what the new 20" iMacs use, the TN panel.

Yeah, they're now TN, which is inferior to the previous displays. If I were you, they're due for an update, and they'll probably get penryn, led backlighting, and an option for a better video card. Wait (unless you need one, in which case, there is nothing wrong with the current ones.)

thanks for the info about the 2 types of screens. There definitely seems to be a lot of negative comments about the 20" so I think I'll wait a little while.

I ordered a 20" iMac yesterday without ever hearing anything about the "TN" screens before. Frankly didnt visit this sub-forum much. But everyone seems to be dogging the 20" and I was second guessing my order.

Well then I thought "I wonder what my current LCD (Samsung) looks like at an extreme angle?" So I stood to the side and it has the discoloration too. Thing is, Ive had this monitor for a year and a half and today is the first time Ive noticed. And thats simply because when Im on the computer Im sitting IN FRONT of it, not off at an angle. Im no longer worried about the TN display on the 20"

Anyway, you have an LCD now? Stand to the side and see if it had the discoloration. If so and you never noticed before, I wouldnt let the naysayers change your mind about the current 20"
