I recently bought a 24" iMAC, which is my first MAC purchase ever. I got an email from Apple this morning saying that it has shipped. When I check the FedEx link it showed a ship from location as Shanghai, CN. Is that Shanghai China? I would have thought Apple had a US ship point. Has anyone else had theirs shipped from China?

Yes, it's in China. Yes, it's a normal ship-out point for many Macs, as the contract manufacturers of most of the consumer Macs at least (MacBook, iMac, Mini, etc) are in China. Yes, my iBook came from China. It'll be here soon, and you'll love it. Promises. :)

Thanks.. Hopefully the 4-6 day shipping holds true. China is a long ways away.

Typically this isn't a big deal... welcome to the 21st century! Typically the customs hold is longer than the flight across the ocean. :D

Ha.. I just meant that it was a long ways away and lots can go wrong when it comes to shipping companies. Just last week I had a packaged ship from Chicago, which was three hours from my house. The package left Chicago and came within 45 minutes of my house as it was shipped up to Minneapolis. It sat there for two days before being shipped down to Madison, again passing with 45 minutes of my house. It sat there for a day before finally being delivered.

That definitely does happen. Just doesn't seem particularly more likely to happen when things get drop shipped from Shanghai than from somewhere in the US. My iBook, Airport, and iPod all came from China fairly quickly. Anyway, I hope no nuisances arise and you have that machine firmly in your hands in the very near future.

And you are required to post a "opening up my new iMac" thread. :D

I'm in Australia and my iMac is coming from Sydney (our biggest city), not China:).

I think certain common configurations tend to be stockpiled locally, particularly in certain markets... they use flexible logistics that maximize delivery time. So at least in the US, computers sometimes FOB in the US and sometimes in China.

If you run that Coconut program, I'm thinking you'll find your computer was built elsewhere, though. I may be wrong, but I am under the impression Apple does not build anything in Oz.

Just to update. The iMAC shipped from Shanghai 12/4. Today, 12/5, it is in the Fedex Truck for Delivery. Wow. I am impressed.
So tonight I should be setting up my new 24".
2.33Ghz, 2MB RAM, 250 HD, 7600GT, Final Cut HD Express... :)
