I keep putting dvds from maxell into my superdrive and it keeps spitting them back out!

I'm trying to burn moves to the DVD but the drive reads it and then shoots it out.

even after rebooting and trying it that way it does the same!

suggestions?

Some others have this same problem and a friend that just got an iMac has issues with cds/dvds that have coatings i.e. white top. takes them in then shazaam! lands on the desk  Apples going to replace the drive for him but not a good first (switcher) impression.

not the same problem exactly, but i've already had the burner replaced on my iMac once, and it may need another one, no matter what media I try it acts schizophrenic when reading/writing them.

iMac shoots out DVDs

Saw the thread title and thought I'd add my story only to find it's a little OT but what the hay.

I had a friend staying a few eeks back and they asked if I'd put a bunch of pictures and videos from their cameras onto a DVD for them. No problemo, we built the project in iMovie and sent it on its merry way to iDVD then went to bed.

Next morning I got up after they'd left for the airport with the wife and I suddenly thought about the DVD, I checked the iMac and it's drive was empty so I thought they'd helped themselves before leaving.

A few days later they called and during our chat asked if I'd mail the DVD, I was a little confused 'cause I thought they had it. Anyway I figured I must've ballsed up and sent the project to iDVD with no disc in so I re-sent it and all went fine.

It's not the first time I'd gone to burn a DVD or CD and left the room to find I'd 'forgotten' to put a disc in. Idiot.

So one day recently I'm burning a new CD for the car from iTunes and I'm sat at the iMac when it finishes and ejects the CD. Only it completly ejects the CD like a cartoon toaster and the CD lands on-top of my scanner rolls across the top and down on to a stack of files, across them until it hits the wall, turns through 90° and slides down between the desk and wall.

I had to crawl under the desk and fumble about for the CD, what do I find? About six burnt discs which I thought I'd never inserted!

I betcha you're using DVD-R discs. The iMac will burn to DVD-R, but iDVD won't. At least, that's the way my iMac behaves. You need to use DVD+R discs.

And yes, it does have a habit of rather forcefully ejecting discs.

In your head.
For giggles, what kind of optical drive is installed and what does the OS recognize.

Finder--->Apple menubar icon-->About this Mac-->More Info->Hardware>disk burning or optical drive.

Post the results, it might help.

I had the same problem, but it was a PEBKAC issue. I purchased an iMac and thought it had a DVD burner, it didn't. I spent quite a while trying to figure out the problem. This isn't your issue, but I'd thought you like the laugh.
