So I recently switched from a PC, though I've used macs here and there. I'm glad this forum exists. My name is jeff and I look forward to participating and interacting with all of you. So I kind of have a petty gripe about the imac I just bought (about a week ago).

The F3 button on the keyboard (the bigger one that includes a number pad) has a nice expose icon on it. the F10-F12 buttons have great little volume control icons. The problem is that all the shortcuts aren't right for those icons. keys F9-11 control expose and I'm not even sure how to turn the volume up and down by shortcut. I've tried all the modifier keys (ctrl, option, cmd) and none of them set the volume.

so we have these icons on these corresponding keys:
F1 and F2 = brightness
F3 = expose
F4 = Dashboard
F7 = previous track
F8 = play/pause
F9 = next track
F10 = mute
F11 and F12 = volume up/down

So why are these mapped differently? if :apple: wants to update their shortcuts they should update their keyboards as well. Now I would like to remap these keys, but I don't like piddling around with keymaps because I don't want another mac to behave differently, and I don't want to map over other fuctions or mess up the keymap structure in any way. I am a very visual person and very design minded though - I think it will drive me insane to stare at icons that are not just serving no purpose, they are making interaction with the computer almost intentionally counter intuitive.

I'm not sure what I want to do yet, but I wanted to put this info out there and see if anyone else shares this frustration. I also wanted to know what the deal is. Did apple forget to update these icons? am I missing something entirely and if I do some trick these bindings will function? Is there a keyboard shortcut that ejects the selected mounted volume(s)?

well, that's all I have for today. I hope someone knows the scoop. thanks for your input in advance. you're good people. Well, I hope so anyway,

Jeff,

uncheck System Preferences -> Keyboard & Mouse -> Keyboard ->"Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys". It sounds like you have it activated.

I probably found this thread as you were typing:

alright I'm on board with the option+ L/R arrows as the home/end replacement. Now Is there a way to eject a disk image via the eject key, or do I always have to drag and drop it to the trash? cause that would be quite a drag... ;) I think I'll be on my way to basking in my macdom as soon as I solve this...

*edit* I got it cmd+e = yay!
I just wonder why one wouldn't want the eject button to eject disk images...

why does ctrl+F4 only work for window switching sometimes? it's not working at the moment, but I'm sure once i navigate through different windows in other ways it will work again. any ideas?
