2017 27" iMac 3.4GHz Quad Core Intel Core i5, 24GB memory, 2 x 1TB internal SSD storage. Printer is Brother HL2270DW connected via USB cable. It also connects via Bonjour to a Mac Mini elsewhere in the house.

Just upgraded from macOS 15.3 to 15.3.1. Computer ran with no issues prior to upgrade.

Since upgrading, almost every time the printer activates, whether it is printing or I just insert a sheet of paper in the manual feed, or I open the printer and close it, or just turn on the printer, my iMac shuts down; no warning and no error message at shutdown or at startup. Also happens when printing initiated by the remote Mini.

I tried resetting the print system on both computers, installed a different Brother Driver, with no behavior change. I also have a Canon Pixma Pro-100 and there are no issues when printing to that. Also connected the printer to the older Mac Mini by USB and Bonjoured the iMac and in that configuration, everything works! Unfortunately, no room available in the area the Mini is to keep it there permanently.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Um your printer plug into the same power strip as your iMac? Did you know you might have overloaded the power? Laser printer spike in power watt, should never plug into the same power strip and or into a battery backup power at all.

Thanks for your reply and I thought it might be a power spike, however the printer is plugged into a different outlet (might be the same circuit though). The iMac is plugged into a UPS, so one would think it would be somewhat immune from a power spike. Besides that, I've had the same setup for at least 5 years with no issue. It's only since I upgraded to 12.3.1. Interestingly, I erased the SSD and did a fresh install of 12.3, but the problem is happening there also.

I agree that this sounds like a power problem, not a computer problem. Are you sure your Mac is plugged into a battery backed outlet on the UPS? Most UPSes have surge-only outlets as well. It may also be that your UPS is undersized or that the battery has failed.

Appreciate your reply. I checked everything that you mentioned and they are all in good order. It would seem to be a strange coincidence if the UPS would fail, at the same I upgraded to 12.3.1.

Don't know if this could have anything to do with this problem, but while the printer prints fine, I've just discovered that according to Brother, there is no driver for the HL2270DW that is compatible with Monterey. Really strange, since it was working fine on 12.3 before going to 12.3.1. In any case, I tried a different driver for a newer similar Brother printer, but same results.

and it gets stranger. I plugged the printer into a different outlet on the same circuit and it works fine. Plugged it into a different outlet on the same circuit and back to the original issue, so am currently using it on an extension cord to the outlet where it works ok. Will have to add an outlet nearer my computer, as I have found it impossible to set up this printer to work via Wi-Fi
