Also my doc on the bottom seems to get smaller, and then when i re size it back to normal ,it cant go back to that original smaller size. very weird activity.

any ideas..?

Could be a number of things causing your issue. Might be overheating - board or RAM is going bad.

What are you doing when this happens - intense processor work or standard fare or does it just happen randomly? How long before it shuts off - are you able to run stress tests/diagnostics?

hi

im just doing normal things when this happens, no stress on the system. plently of ram. very weird activity. no pattern for how long, the 1st time it was like 30 min, today it was after 12 hours, so no pattern. how can i run diagnostics? any app u recommend.?

This was a very common problem and was covered under a repair extension program, which, I'm sorry to say, closed at the end of 2008. There are lots of Google search results on the topic.

My iMac suffered from the same problem and was ultimately swapped out for a brand new C2D iMac. Perhaps if you pressure Apple politely you might get similar treatment, or at least a free power supply/logic board replacement. It would be in your best interest not to use the iMac unless you have to, as the random shutdowns can start causing problems with other components, in particular the HDD.

Reboot while holding the "D" key. Follow along for Apple Diagnostics.

If you have Apple Care and it's still active I suggest downloading TechTool Deluxe (it's most likely "pushing it" on apple care as your model was released in 2005 / 2006? I forget). You can get it direct from Apple at no charge if your Apple Care is in effect for that machine. Apple link: https://support.apple.com/techtooldeluxe/main?id=dl

repair program

I had seen that repair program for years since it had been on the apple site, but i never thought anything of it b.c it didnt affect my computer, and now after what i think 3.5 years this problem starts happening! Ill be calling apple soon. Also, i did the techtool and it says everything passed and it says everything is fine.
I dont have apple care.
