Today my imac did something unusual. I was surfing the net and scrolling through the screen with my mouse and my imac shut down by itself. I bought my mac back in feb and have all the software updates. Also there are no schedules in the energy saver to shut down at a specific time. I am starting to get paranoid and wonder if i should bring it in to the apple store. Is there something that could have caused this? I should mention that i am connected to a surge protector, nothing else on the strip shut off. Any help or advice would be appreciated, thanks!

First check for a loose power cable. After that see if it happens again. If it does, take it to an Apple Store. If it is a problem, it is likely the power supply either overheating or just dying.

Is it shutting down (like when you go to Apple --> Shutdown) or is the power just turning off abruptly?

shutting down abruptly, i was looking at the screen and then boom, black screen. thanks for all the advice, i downloaded that widget. Just not sure what could cause this, still in my opinion a new computer
