Hey all,

I've been using my iMac for about 1 month now. I do notice that when I put the iMac into sleep mode, it will spontaneously wake up. I do have wireless peripherals and I will turn them all off before putting the iMac to sleep.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I use Sleep successfully but there are several events which can wake an iMac from sleep.

First, have a look in System preferences - Energy Saver - Power and make sure Wake for Network Access is unticked.

You may find that USB devices can wake you up too - for example a UPS connected via a USB cable will wake the iMac to tell you it is running on battery power - very annoying in the middle of the night!

Well mine wakes up all the time, I did what you recommended here and after 3 days I believe this fixed mine, it hasn't woke on its own since.:D
Finally!!!:D

Thanks a million for that tip, much appreciated!!

Mine does the same! Occasionally, after putting it to sleep it will wake after approx 10 seconds. I think it is because the HDD I use for Time Machine sometime wakes the computer - if it too hasn't gone into sleep mode too.

My problem is I try to shut off my wireless mouse and keyboard when i put imac to sleep but it wakes up looking to connect.Only way i can save battery life is to shut down imac and then shut off my mouse and keyboard.Anyone have any ideas how to put imac to sleep and shut off my mouse and keyboard?

There's no need to switch of your keyboard and mouse. They automatically go into sleep mode, thereby not using battery.

If you have the track pad or new mouse, make sure you don't have any cords hitting it. My wife kept putting her ipod cord in a way that it would brush against the mouse, waking the system up.

Hello everyone! First time poster here. :)

Since the first of Jan., I've had a problem with my 3 year-old iMac waking up for no apparent reason. This can happen day or night. When it wakes up, the screen stays on bright, never dims again or goes back to sleep even though I have those functions set in preferences. I tried unticking the Network Access function, but this hasn't helped. The only thing I've downloaded recently is Rosetta Stone software, but that was several weeks before 1/1/11.

I haven't added any new hardware, etc., so I'm at a loss for understanding why this is happening.

Another problem I'm experiencing is a thumping, sort of pinging sound from my speakers at random times. It sounds like some kind of warning tone, sometimes happens at a fast rate, sometimes slow. I can usually click back & forth between e-mail & Safari and get rid of the sound, but there have been a couple of time when I had to restart the iMac to get rid of the noise.

The other day I did have a "malware detected" window pop up, which I ignored.

The only thing different on my computer was an Apple software update I did on 1/1/11.

I'm wondering if this could be a result of the software update, or could I have (somehow) unwittingly exposed my iMac to malware.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :apple:

I have a iMac sleep issue too, that mainly involves my keyboard. It doesnt happen all the time, but more than enough to get me annoyed. If I keep my iMac in sleep for more than 12 hours, I'll wake it back up and the caps lock light will not turn on at all. The keyboard works fine and types, but caps lock won't turn on. If I restart the computer or shut it down, everything will be normal again
If this a software problem with the keyboard that can be fixed with a software update or I have to call apple to get another keyboard?

Do you keep iTunes running or completely close it out? That may well be the culprit.

I usually quit all my programs before I put the computer in sleep.

When I read your post I was thinking, dang, that must be annoying to quit out of everything each time you sleep it because I just optioncommandejectBAM to put mine to sleep. I am NOT by any means a heavy multitasker by any means but it got me thinking... is there a "Kill all" task manager/killer app for mac that closes everything out?

(Sorry for the irrelevant post.)

That's ok, I'm just trying to figure out this weird keyboard issue I'm having when I put the computer in sleep.

Caps lock shouldn't be having issues just because I have the computer in sleep for 14-15 hours, then all of a sudden work again when I restart the computer.

I'm glad you mentioned this.

I just noticed that "thumping" noise I described in my previous post is the same sound you get when you press & hold the spacebar on your keyboard.

I'm wondering if the computer "sees" activity on the keyboard and wakes up and/or makes that sound.

Hi
My problem is when I select sleep mode, by using the shortcut option-command-eject, my imac goes to sleep for about 3 seconds and then wakes it self up. It seems to work Ok when I select sleep by any other method. I have the full wired key board with numerical pad and again its only when using the sleep shortcut.
Its like having a brand new beautiful car and there is a tiny scratch on it that no one sees only you. Its driving me crazy. Has anybody any ideas?
Regards. GC

Using the Console you can usually find some hint about what is waking your Mac.

Open Console, click 'All messages', type 'wake' in the search field. There you can find your latest wakeups, like this example where my Mamba mouse woke my computer:

Code:
2011-01-26 23.52.17	kernel	The USB device Razer Mamba (Port 3 of Hub at 0xfd100000) may have caused a wake by issuing a remote wakeup (3)

my bluetooth headset used to wake mine up all the time even though they weren't paired. Every time I would use it for a phone call the iMac would wake up. Under the bluetooth advanced settings there's a check box for allowing BT devices to wake the computer.

OK after doing a bit of detective work I think it has to do with my router. I did update its software recently and it seems to coincide with this.I get the following in console
27/01/2011 21:41:36 configd[13] network configuration changed.
27/01/2011 21:41:36 configd[13] network configuration changed.
27/01/2011 21:41:39 mDNSResponder[30] DeregisterInterface: Frequent transitions for interface en0 (192.168.1.7)
Would resetting the router be a good idea? Also do you need to set pram and smc together.? Is there any thing I should trash in the library folder?
Thanks.
