Let me start by saying I do not know a lot about computers in general, so please over look some not so technical terms.

I have a little over 3 year old iMac G5 that has been a fabulous computer. A few days ago I went into the computer room and realized I could hear the fan running quietly on the computer even though the screen was dark. The indicator light on the front was lit up and staying on, not doing the fade-y thingy it does when the computer is sleeping. Hit a button and the computer woke up like it was asleep. I put it to sleep manually from the menu and it went to sleep like normal. I chalked it up to nothing important.

Over the last few days I have noticed that everytime the computer puts itself to sleep, the screen goes dark, the fans keep running, and the indicator light stays on. It still wakes up fine and goes to sleep correctly when I do it manually. I played with my sleep settings, no difference.

Thoughts? I assume it is not a good thing and have been making sure to put it to sleep before I leave the room, but would like to fix the issue if I could.

Thanks and sorry this got so long!

Thanks... I just found the instructions on Apple and will try it when I get home from work. Hopefully it helps. I don't mind putting it to sleep myself, but it would be nice to not worry about it. This was my first Mac and I can't believe I have gone 3 years before i had a problem with it!

Good luck, hope this works for you. One of our iMacs (aluminum) never goes to sleep on its own. I've tried everything to no avail.

One thing I've noticed is mine will occasionally freeze when waking up from sleep. I have to do a hard shut-down (hold the power button in until it turns off) in order to bring it back.

Just got my iMac last week (and I love it, btw). Haven't had time to research the issue yet.
